@Fantastische Hure that’s why RoF movie is indeed canon (I think). Unlike BoG the manga skips it completely and just tells you to check the movie.

Oh, actually, the Pilaf gang does appear in the manga's retelling of BoG. They're climbing a palmtree in the top right panel here:

The implication seems to be that they hid when Birus started beating everyone up.
