You'll see that aspect of Joe for a while, a result of living all his life as a (usually) homeless orphan that isn't good at depending on others. This does lead to great character development and growth for him, particularly around episodes 50-55 of AnJ and the start of AnJ2.

I see, that's cool. Will Rikiishi's arc also take place on these 55 episodes?

Speaking about Joe vs Wolf, I wonder why he went for his cross counter when he knew his opponent had a counter for that. Well, let's see.

The Rikiishi Arc indeed concludes with Episode 55. After that, switch to AnJ2 episode 2. The remainder of the original anime covers the Carlos Arc, but AnJ2 does it infinitely better.

Rikiishi's training seems savage over a first glance. Everything to lose weight and face Joe. Subjecting his body to that is a savage way to train and cut the weight.

I foresee you needing 3 more years to finish the anime.

first time I see yoko riled up. it's cool to see Rikiishi's resolve, just shows how much he values this fight. he seems to be taking it more seriously than even joe.

and KissAnime crashed so I'm having to watch it in a brazilian site.

If you're that far into the anime, you may as well stick to it, seeing as how Ashita no Joe 2's anime is superior to the manga versions of the Carlos/Mendoza Arcs.

Also, 9anime.to is an alternative if Kissanime isn't working.

damn, Rikiishi is going crazy over this training regimen. his performance will be certainly decreased with all this.

he couldn't even drink water to lose weight? how is water going to hurt this weight loss?

It's curious to see the contrast between Joe and Rikiishi's training. While the latter is generating anguish and unhealthy the former is all cheered up and fun -- although not devoid of hard work, of course.

That's also good for us to reflect on the amount of work fighters need to put when moving classes... and that this might be the deciding factor in some matches' results that gets glossed over by most.

Rikiishi's sacrifice for the weight loss is the one McGregor would have to make if he opted to fight Tenshin Nasukawa.

Rikiishi.... Rikiishi...... Rikiishi...........

Rikiishi...........

yeah, he pushed up daisies. not the best death moment out of the anime series I've followed but touching. let's see how they will rearrange these last episodes and see how Joe conducts himself there on.

Joe seemed to be dealing well with Rikiishi's death but we later found out how shattered and messed up he was.

His comment about feeling empty without Rikiishi seems a good and pertinent one, which goes on to show how much Rikiishi has influenced the path he is taking. I foresee that Yoko and Joe will become closer together now... they seem the most affected by it and each one should understand the other well.

Joe's reflection towards Rikiishi's death was very well made and truthful. It's good that he says he's only noticed how much Rikiishi meant to him when he died, as most of us only notice a thing's worthynes and it's done. Joe seems to pit himself for the cause of the death being himself... understandably so as even if obviously unintentional it was still caused by a punch of him. A fatality, of course, accelerated by Rikiishi's unhealthy weight loss.

I dislike the way Yoko acted towards Joe. Understandably so as she cared a lot for Rikiishi and she is still in the initial phase of digesting his death, but this "female character bitches over protagonist only for her to respect and admire him afterwards" is a card that I've already seen used many times, in Berserk with Guts and Casca as an example.

I found that brawler who aggravated Wolf's chin injure a pretty interesting character, although pity he won't show up anymore. Pretty collected and watchful of everything, also knowing his limitations and knowing how to pinpoint someone's potential. Joe wasted him when he bad mouthed Wolf and that's understandable as he feels kinda liable for what happened to him, maybe aggravated by what Yoko said earlier.

Joe's resolve is complete now... he saw that living a life of regret and lamenting over Rikiishi won't do him any good and he'll probably kick in with his goals. All the scenes showing Joe's struggle up to this point were very well made and a realistic representation over someone with this much grief.

I've finished the 55 episodes of the old anime and should switch to episode 2 of the newer one. Pity that I won't listen to this amazing track the old anime offered again, definitely one of its strong suits.

Again, Yoko was one of the earlier examples of this, not to mention it was likely the biggest loss she'd suffered at this point in her life.

He actually does show up a few times in the later arcs.

AnJ2 probably doesn't have a track on par with Joe's Whistle or Rikiishi's theme, though it easily makes up for it in variety and isn't that far behind in quality either.

Captain Cadaver can you link to Joe's Whistle? I just read up to Rikiishi's death in the manga and then switched to AnJ2, so I've never heard that track.
