It still tried too hard to be edgy and had unlikable characters as well as copied too much from Hunter x Hunter (the forest death exams, the magic using seemingly unbeatable antagonist lurking in the depths and lusting after the hero's body talent etc.). The beginning is far better than the shit after Sasuke ragequit his village though, it becomes trash from there. OP began very standard but it showed its quality from Alabasta and onwards and only truly fell off after Marineford, so Oda is unquestionably the more talented writer.
