How strong was he? We're supposed to see it as a big deal that he scarred Shanks.

Shanks said he wasn't careless when being scarred. He also spoke about Ace's fame and trust. The trust points to Ace being blindsided by something, but it could be something else. Someone should pull that up. I'd like to know what the Japanese says.


Who knows. I think his true strength could be related to the plot. Like very unusual hidden power that he tapped into to hurt Shanks. It would have to be something unusual, because it caught Shanks off guard even when he wasn't being careless. Maybe he was always strong and just pretended to be weaker to get the fruit. Shanks talks about how BB was hiding in WB's crew. Or he's usually without haki, but he has a powerful haki he taps into with a specific stimulus.

There's not much to go off. He fought Ace, but it's hard to gauge Ace since we barely saw him fight and never saw Ace vs any who used haki to hit him.

Maybe BB's power unlocks when he fights someone famous. Shanks was famous already. Ace was famous. He only cared about Luffy when he found out hus bounty was 100M. He wants fame. His child image is him looking sad and abandoned, so he wants fame. He wants fame by getting big name or big bounty pirates, and being a shichibukai.

When exactly did he scar Shanks?

Shanks had the scar in chapter 1, which was around 10 years ago. Blackbeard joined WB's crew at 12yo, so around 26 years before killing Thatch/Marineford War. He also met Buggy/Shanks back then and they didn't interact, plus Shanks doesn't have the scar in the Roger/Oden flashback from 25 years ago or at Roger's execution. So it was after BB joined WB, and after Roger's crew disbanded, but before Shanks met Luffy.

I think the Ace Novel has more about BB.

He at least had the scar 1 year before meeting Luffy, cause we saw him with it when he stole the Nika fruit which was 13 years ago.

So Shanks probably wasn't Yonko tier yet, but then it makes the statement less impactful if it was about a much weaker Shanks. I'm not sure on this one.

Shanks had a 1.04 billion bounty at Foosha Village, if it means anything. If he was as strong as Katakuri then it might be enough to discourage Whitebeard regarding Ace.
