I dunno if this is necessarily true. While that was the effect of the power up, Boss Kaioshin was still under the impression that Gohan would be able to transform.

That doesn't mean Old Kaioshin knew he would become a SSJ. He knew that his power would be unleashed by simply using the same process of powering up, in which case Gohan still remained in his base form while still becoming stronger than he ever was.

Hm, maybe so. The strength checker quote makes it sound much more ambiguous than Viz.

If anything, that scene would suggest Gohan's Ultimate state completely overrides his ability to go Super Saiyan, seeing as how he activates it with near enough the same method.

The action seems fairly similar to what everyone does to power up, so I wouldn’t say it’s lumping the power up as a transformation. Rather it’s asserting both Ultimate and SSJ as power ups.

Besides, he could just repeat the process again once in Ultimate to go SSJ

One thing I wanted to add was that I've always thought that those green eyes he had during his rage moment was signifying his SSJ form slowly being diminished as the effects of the ritual start to present itself.

That was just a matter of mastering his Potential & controlling Ki.

How SuperSaiyan was introduced in DragonBall Super the Transformation was done the same way by Kale & Caulifla.
Powering up but focusing Ki without the anger.

Even though Gohan has Ultimate, SuperSaiyan or any natural Saiyan Transformation wouldn't be lost due to S-Cells.
Depending on how much he keeps up with maintaining the ability to Transform & remain a good hearted character.
Then SuperSaiyan etc is still going to be there.
