I wouldn't think too much about it. I think the point is that Luffy's sheer willpower is what allowed him to overcome Crocodile despite the huge gap in their powers. We've seen it multiple times. He didn't beat Lucci or Katakuri because of his superior strength, he won through his strength of character.

Plot armor aside, pre-nerf Katakuri beats that version of Luffy. He only beat Crocodile because Water > Sand. Willpower didn’t have anything to do with it.
