This, to be honest. And it was even backed up by his fight with Kizaru on Sabaody.

He was on the verge of losing after a few clashes. Luffy was fighting Kaido to a standstill for >30 minutes.

I'd have to reread it but that sounds a little extreme. He was definitely on the losing end due to his stamina problems but I wouldn't say he was on the verge of losing, personally.

I may have misremembered but your right, he didn't actually say that. I thought he mentioned that he wasn't gonna hold out.

I'd still give it to Luffy though.
