GT's color palette wasn't much different from DBZ's. It's just that the film master had aged by the time the Dragon Box came out, making the show look darker than it really was.

This is a DBZ flashback in GT (Dragon Box):

This is how the scene looked in DBZ:

A group of fans called Seed of Might actually remastered the entirety of GT by themselves (sans the TV special, because it seems Toei lost the original film master to it).

GT has never looked better.

I think it has more to do with GT's usage of warm colors. The sky is almost always red/pink but with a muted tone, and it gives a more hellish 90s vibe to the show.

The art itself also has a more detailed, shiny feel to it. I feel like Yamamuro (The animator known for this style) was more involved in GT than he was in Z.

Z could also have this polished look sometimes, but I guess it doesn't jump out as much with yellow hair.

It's not like most of the episodes took place on New Planet Plant or the distorted Earth lol. While most releases of GT have reddish/pinkish tint, that's only due to the aged film master.

Also, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru was the GT's main animator supervisor and character designer, not Tadayoshi Yamamuro.

Scotty told you everything you need to know. Although I haven't heard that lost the film masters. Even if they did, FujiTV would have high quality tapes in storage, but due to how the laws work in Japan, Toei would have to pay to use them for a home release. So that's never going to happen.

Only the film master to the TV special seems to have been lost. A tape recording of the special was released for the Dragon Box instead.

Yeah, this Seed of Might work makes GT actually look incredible. Cutting off the frames is bothersome though, feels like I'm looking through a window to watch a show.

I will try it out when I do my GT rewatch. My goodness. That was a tough 64 episodes for me to get through.

I don't recall anything about the frames being cut in Seed of Might's remaster. I'm pretty sure it's higher resolution than any of the official releases.

They removed 6 pixels on each edge because the picture is frayed. Some people have complained about it.

Hm, even with Seed of Might's remaster, GT's DBZ flashbacks aren't as colorful as the scenes originally were in DBZ.

It's not a big deal, though. Maybe Toei just applied a filter to flashbacks?
