Take off their clothes? No, cuz they never had any. But did they ever take off commercially long-term? Maybe it's my mind skipping over less familiar pokemon, but the plushes I see in-store are Pikachu. The Switch controllers are Pikachu and Meowth. I've seen Gengar around as or on merch. Where's Cyndaquil, Celebi, Totodile, Mudkip, Treecko, gen 2 grass, Wobuffet etc. Some of those were once popular. You see a kid wearing a pokemon shirt...which pokemon is on it? Probably Gen 1, unless it's not got one and it's something like "let's go catch 'em all" with a pokeball (saw a shirt like this today or yesterday).
