Did DragonBall Super compromise Vegeta's character?

A-lot of people laud Vegeta's so-called "character development" but in my opinion the Vegeta in DragonBall Super does not feel like a natural extension of his original DragonBall self. The Vegeta in the original whilst having grown as a character and started being more caring still had a bit of a rough side to him, case-in-point the way he hugged Trunks before blowing himself up against Boo or the way he talked to Piccolo before that. He never outwardly showed it as in your face as DB-Super does, like how Vegeta cared about Bra's name or being overly fatherly. He has become a better person but there's still an edge to him he isn't just a somewhat grumpy person with the gang that's completely overtly outgoing wih everyone. He cares but in his own way.

DragonBall Super seemed to throw all that away to make Vegeta father of the year and care so much about everyone in the gang and "MY BULMA" also seemed weird. Like trying to appeal to modern family-friendly rival characters. I think DragonBall GT from what I've seen did a better job with his character.

I'd say Super did a good job for the most part, even if not as naturally as GT did, since it still felt like a natural and realistic progression of Vegeta becoming more open of his familial bond and accepting of his life as an Earthling at the end of the battle with Boo and leading into his position at the End of Z where he's taken to wearing Earthling attire and not trying to be the centre of attention. However, the ToP Arc ruined this in both the manga and anime, with him becoming obsessed with surpassing Goku and seemingly only caring about being the strongest until his battle with Toppo respectively being a major case of character regression.

I agree with CC, the ToP arc kinda ruined that with him being a dick to Goku with that Spirit Bomb. There's something that I liked about ToP Vegeta where he eas fighting other than his family (Cabba) and I thought that was a good moment IMO. The one that stand out to me most was how Vegeta was opened about his mission in Zamasj arc where he tried his best to save Trunks world.

I just think DB-Super way over-did it.

I'm not even necessarily saying they did wrong. I just think it could have been done more gradually, they didn't do a complete 180, but close enough.

Nah it was wrong. In the manga he feels like a pg-13 softy. But then again I dont think any of the characters in the manga are accurate to themselves.

I think the anime did it worse to be honest. Stuff like the Vegeta entertaining Bills thing by cooking just didn't seem right or trying to tell Trunks that Freeza turned-over a new leaf.

Im.referring more to speaking patterns and dialogue/character interactions. In the manga the characters sound completely foreign compared to the original manga. At least in the anime they sound somewhat consistent to what they did in Z's anime. The nonsensical dialogue is a different issue.

It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad.

I'd say manga DBS Vegeta was a bizarre version of Cell Arc Vegeta who cared about his family, so his character was compromised. Though, I can't speak about the anime because I've barely watched it.

Agreed with CC. I also prefer GT's portrayment of Vegeta's character. It feels more natural imo.

The manga at least sometimes has throwbacks to things that characters used to say or have said before, like Galu attempting to sabotage Zamasu's relationship with his alternate self like he tried to talk Boo into betraying Babidi. But yeah most of the characterization in the manga is still complete BS.

Like at the beginning of DragonBall GT we see Vegeta literally dragging Goten and Trunks to go with Goku because they've become so low. That shows he cares about them but not like in DragonBall Super.
