Did Goku have a sort of "soft spot" for Freeza in Z?

Yeah, he obviously hated the guys guts for what he did to Krillin, but the fact that he was able to get over his murderous rage and settle for simply humiliating Freeza kinda makes me wonder if somewhere inside Goku, there was a weird sort of respect for Freeza. He seems to genuinely value Freeza from strictly a warrior's perspective - it's part of the reason why he lets him power up and feels like Freeza getting cut down by his own attack was ill-fitting. What do you think?

He most likely thought letting the gai live-in humiliation is a bigger defeat than you know...he even gave him a speech about being thankful for the blessing that is life.

He did end-up doing him in Trunks' time-line presumably sooooooo...
