I’m about to start volume 1 which I haven’t read in years. Usually I start at the 21st but fuck it. I’m using this thread to post my thoughts, questions, and, most, importantly, to, Discuss... XD

Lol volume 1 is titled The Monkey King in Viz. I wonder if this is true to the Japanese title?

Might be, considering Sun Wokung from Journey to the West was also referred to as Monkey King and also I thought I heard that some-where before.

First thing we see is Goku jumping 30 feet in the air to destroy a massive tree stump that he casually tossed. Tell me how Goku is only twice as strong as the farmer??

Was also considering rereading Dragon Ball, or at least the Pre Z Portion which I want badly to make power levels out of it don’t think I’ve ever read in it’s entirety.

Tell me SSJ2, how is it going? I know you’re pretty early still, but would you say Kid Goku’s Arc is worth it?

I'd say so GSM. After experiencing Super I'd say anything pre EOZ is worthwhile. It's different for sure, but it has a fun vibe.

Chapter 3: Goku one shots the Bear Bandit. How strong is Bear Bandit? Could he beat the Farmer with Shotgun?

First thing we see is Goku jumping 30 feet in the air to destroy a massive tree stump that he casually tossed. Tell me how Goku is only twice as strong as the farmer??

To be fair, battle powers only measure Ki and aren't a linear measurement of physical strength, with Goku's only ability in harnessing Ki in the first arc being his very basic Kamehaemha.

That, and Toriyama left himself little wiggle room for retroactively placing numbers on Pre-Z characters.

Chapter 4

Roshi is introduced to Galu and Bulma. He offers Goku an Immortal Phoenix as a reward for helping the turtle. However the turtle claims the Phoenix died.. What do you think this bird actually was? Roshi says he would’ve had it grant Galu immortality.

Chapter ends with Goku and Bulma arriving at Oolong’s village. It seems like a ghost town, yet Goku says he can “sense someone”. What kind of sensing is this? Intuition?

Chapter 5

So Goku actually goes up to a house and says “I know you’re in there”. And also claimed that he sensed all kinds of people around. So what is he able to sense here? Simple life energy?

Popo accuses Goku of trying to follow him with his eyes rather than his senses, so I suppose it's just a very basic intuition that tracks down one's presence and intentions based on how Yamcha said Jackie Chun had no "fighting spirit", but not their strength.

What do you think this bird actually was? Roshi says he would’ve had it grant Galu immortality.

Considering Roshi would later go on to confirm him drinking the immortality elixir was a lie, it was probably just something that extended a lifespan to unatural levels likes Roshi's.

What kind of sensing is this? Intuition?

One of Goku's key traits in the early arc is his animalistic abilities from his upbringing. This instinct would be one of them, considering some animals like dogs can be extremely alert to the presence of those nearby.

They also can't oneshot giant bears. Those Saiyan genes yield amazing sensory GAINZ.
