The GT ending is the best thing in the entire series. Not just because it ended GT, but because it was a good ending…
Okay, it wasn’t a good ending, it was a better ending than Z. Were they running a contest of fan submissions or something?
The way for a story like this to end is with the main character going away. Goku being taken away by Shenlong didn’t really make sense, but fine. Absorbing the Dragon Balls? Odd, but fine. Great. But we have no clue what any of that means. Can Goku grant wishes now? Can he come back as be pleases? Does Goku just cease to exist? What does any of this mean? Nobody knows.
But wait, we get to find out that no, Goku can just show up whenever and he doesn’t age. Okay. Doesn’t really explain anything. And the TV special only opens up more questions, but whatever.
It’s incredible lazily set 100 years later and we clearly missed a lot because we have Goku and Vegeta child doppelgängers and we learn that Goku’s and Vegeta’s families fell out of touch at some point and there’s at least one generation after Pan that is… dead?
I think that a much more fitting ending would be similar, but I would change it in the following ways: Pan and Bulma’s/Vegeta’s descendant clearly know each other. Maybe pack more family members around them. Make Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. look a little different (I enjoyed that they gave Goku Jr. different eyes) and even though I don’t like the laziness of their names, fine.
During their fight, Pan catches a glimpse that reminds her of the actual Goku and she smiles fondly with great nostalgia (that’s for us as audience members). And then have the “camera” pan up through the skies, to another dimension, now into Other World where they’re holding their own Other World Budokai and it’s the actual Goku and Vegeta fighting one another with all the characters that would’ve been dead watching in the stands, in their prime as the theme song plays with different scenes from DB and DBZ spliced in during the Goku/Vegeta fight.
I think that would’ve been a great ending.
