How close are their battle powers? Why is this one of the only instances in the series where so much damage was dealt from a physical attack between two close powers?

Maybe Raditz was shocked by the fact that a kid had such high battle power, which in turn affected his ability to guard against it. That, or maybe Raditz just sucks at defense, considering that he was freaking out over a battle power in the 900s (Goku's Kamehameha)

Yeah the anime makes him appear off guard, though it’s pretty indicative of his inability as a warrior if he couldn’t defend himself with that much time.

I think it could be argued Gohan would’ve killed Raditz if he was truly stronger. Gohan caught him completely defenseless.

I’ve seen the theory that Raditz isn’t very durable since he hasn’t been in many fights according to Daizenshuu 7. I think he’s just a bitch, though. He’s running away from a Kamehameha that doesn’t even crack 1000.

Well the duo weren't scared by Vegeta's 22k reading and just said that it must be a "malfunction", Zarbon only said that Vegeta was stronger after the 24k reading.
