What do you think of the argument that they aren't close since it was just a sparring match, and sparring isn't a serious fight?

It was a sparring match against a rusty Gohan and he couldn't even touch him. Tbh i only put the Kids on FPSSJ tier because of Trunks bitchslapping Vegeta and being faster than Piccolo.

I don't know what Sappring means. :troll

Anyway, it's been proven many times that sparring makes the match closer because both of the individuals are holding back but in Gohan/Goten case, it was Gohan who is holding back and same goes to Vegeta/Trunks.

Wouldn't Gohan holding back retard him? They were sparring to prepare Gohan to the Budokai after all.

Sparring = \ = holding back.

Gohan obviously didn't want to kill Goten, but nothing suggests he was holding back.

No, Gohan was just sharping skills from the rust that can change your body's toughness and power but there's no reason to assume that Gohan powered up on the Budokai at all.

I never said he powered up. Anyway, how can he polish his skill holding them back?

In terms of power, he's holding back and polishing his skills with a help of someone who's closer on him but not rivals like PL Purists tend to claim. Cell did this too, he was fighting Goku in his full effort but nowhere near close to his full power.

Sparring can range from skill testing to full-on combat. It's difficult to pin down exactly what was meant with this sequence, but Gohan's intention going in was to sharpen his skill and shake off the rust. It wasn't meant to power up in any significant way. He had no idea Goten was strong either, and chose him simply out of convenience.

But it's clear that they are both giving a girthy performance in the two scenes we see. You don't sweat bullets, grit your teeth, and flare an aura if you're taking it easy. Goten might not have to be on Gohan's level, but he should be relevant enough to push Gohan to use noticeable effort. What that threshold is for you might be different for me.

Oh, i thought you was saying the opposite: That he was holding back his efforts but not his power. I still think he was going all out, since it doesn't seem to be a totally even fight for me. Btw Cell wasn't full effort, he changed his speed to fight Gohan but had no aura and no power up was noticed, so he was holding back his efforts at Goku.

Cell was panting when he fought Goku though, who we know wasn't anywhere near at his best. Not that I think Goten is that weak anyway, but you don't need to be at fp to get tired. I can get tired from doing laps around the gym even if I don't use my full speed.

Well surpassing Piccolo is not a big deal on Boo arc anyway, Kaioshin himself is stronger than Piccolo and he turn out to be useless. :troll

Gohan was clearly being pushed by Goten to the point where he flew back. They're pretty close in power.

We see Cell later power up. :shit

Piccolo is the Raditz of the Boo Arc. Even the kids surpass him and are close to Gohan.
