Definitely watch the anime. Pre time-skip anime was good. At-least up-to where I watched and was constantly praised by Eiichiro Oda. Can't comment on post time-skip. I heard it sucked.
The story should start at the Shanks flashback, not whatever they did in the anime.

Not sure what's wrong with it at-all. Just because it's not chronological order doesn't matter in this case. They tell the story in episode 5. You're acting like they're telling it like 600 episodes in or something lol.

And that's only like one instance you named.

That's why a lot of people are put off the anime such as myself when getting into it. The start of East Blue isn't even that great and just seems like some kiddie generic trash, but it's a lot better when you understand Luffy's motivations on this adventure and Shanks losing his arm sets the tone for the rest of the story.

Fuck I’m lost now. Should I watch the anime or read the manga?
Watch the anime I'd say. What he's saying that's only a change in order and the flashback is told in episode 4 anyway. At-least up-to the time-skip seems to be worth-watching. The voice-acting, use of music and everything make it worth-watching. Even classical music is used at one-point for an epic, epic moment (new world symphony).

There really isn't much of a change at-all from what I remember.

I just want him to have the best experience, that's all. Have you even read the manga?

I did last time & I too want him to have the best experience. He's missing-out if he's not watching the anime. My opinion.
