How do feel about the Greed Island saga from HxH?

I've mixed feelings. All the game inspiration Togashi used was cool and well thought out, and showcases his passion for rpg like games and it's nice it had a tie to the saga's ending, meaning the structure of the saga remained solid. Some explanations were kinda too detailed though, so it's something you need to be pretty focused on to get, which can be good and bad I'd say.

I found Biscuit suddenly appearing and training them a tad little too convenient. It's true that this trait of attracting others to their side is something most Shounen protagonists share, but I feel her reasons could have been more clear. The training seemed cool, but I wouldn't complain if there was more of a showing given the big improvement Gon and Killuan underwent.

The dodgeball is one of the saga's highlights and Razor's flashback does very well in showing how a sad scene can be conveyed just well without the need for flamboyant and over the top reactions like in One Piece. Ging being the only one to call Razor by his name and that moving Razor was very cool and shows how ppl can be redeemed if there's even a single person who believes in you. Still, I'd say that given Ging's vote of confidence for Razor, it sounds a little strange that Razor would kill Bopobo quickly like that.

The fight with Gentru was a stepdown from the dodgeball and I expected more in terms of strategy, mainly the usage of game tactics. Gon opened his book and said for Genthru to surrender, but then we got a strategy that Gon merely limited Genthru's room to attack him with his Janken... is there more to it did his strategy limit to that?

Even though it never hit the same heights as Yorknew, Greed Island could've been a decent way for Gon and Killua to further their skills and the world of the series with how it further fleshed out the complexities of Nen. That is, if not for the reveal on the truth of Greed Island breaking the rules of HxH's world. The reveal that it takes place within the world rather than a game dimension causes so many problems - How could Ging and his friends produce so many of the in-game abilities when the limits of what one can do with their Nen ability is very heavily defined? If you can create cards that allow you to teleport people away or restore destroyed limbs like it's nothing, why are they limited to this game rather than for something more productive, particularly the latter card which damages a lot of the stakes going forward (second only to Alluka)? In a series that's very straightforward about the rules of its power system like HxH, this is a major problem in its writing and brings the arc down to being below average at best.
There are still a lot of redeeming aspects of the arc such as some subtle pieces of characterisation for Gon that foreshadow his dark turn in the Chimera Ant Arc as well as Hisoka's role in the arc showcasing why he's far from the archetypical antagonist one could've assumed upon his introduction, but the damage to its world building ends up outweighing those elements.
I found Biscuit suddenly appearing and training them a tad little too convenient. It's true that this trait of attracting others to their side is something most Shounen protagonists share, but I feel her reasons could have been more clear.
Biscuit would've been aware of their skill despite their age in them being able to even enter the game in the first place and went along with them purely to see if she could drive a wedge in their friendship for her own entertainment before their talent and prowess gave her enough respect for them. Her reasoning for being there and following the duo is well defined. If there's any shaky aspect with the writing of her, it'd be that Wing's master running into his students by chance is a bit too coincidental.

I think its just a safe and fun arc, its never going to be anyone's favorite story because its unfortunately squeezed between Yorknew and Chimera Ant arc, which both completely overshadow it. Greed Island is also a very clear case of Togashi channeling his inner Dragon Quest autism and designing his own video game :troll

I just recall the manga being incredibly bogged down by boring details and the training segments. The plot itself had potential but was held back by the many explanations that ahill is referencing.

As for the actual thread, the volley ball part was fun. I dislike how it baited me into thinking the Phantom Troupe would be part of the fun.

Otherwise it was just pretty meh. Except for the explosion guy vs Gon which gave me cancer.
