Trunks initially gave Freeza the chance to use his full power and Freeza just didn't do it. It's also worthy of note that Future Trunks wasn't interested in fighting adrenaline, even more when his main goal was to give Goku the medicine and alert him about the Androids.

Goku used the Nyoi-Bo during the battle, due to a situation of disadvantage. Not saying Goku was inferior to Piccolo because he used his stuff, only saying the difference was pretty small (at least from what I see).
