• Why is pre-fusion Piccolo so high?

- I'm currently under the impression that he's stronger than Gohan. Aside from what Emmeth said, if I recall correctly he's rushing to the battlefield as though he wants to save Gohan, now that he's all protective of him. I'd have to reread to verify.

Piccolo was also going to save Gohan against Cell, so I don't find Piccolo going to save Gohan and Krillin to be the best evidence that he's stronger than them here. I do agree with him being ~half of first form Freeza, though.

I mean, he'd go to save Gohan anyway, sure. Like I said, it's more what the scene feels like than a conclusion I draw from looking at the characters' actions on their own.

Vegeta is sweating in every panel up until he declares himself a Super Saiyan, he is in awe of Freeza's death beam that kills Dende, he is not sure of himself and he looks scared the whole time. Then he declares himself Super Saiyan like a suicide bomber, Freeza ups his speed and Vegeta gives up. He clearly wasn't very confident going in.
