I think that Tao is stronger than Chaozu. Tien stomps him, though. Kid Goku's battle against Tao was pretty one-sided, while Tien truly gave him a hell of a battle.

Tien was talking about his hero. That and he probably had gotten stronger since last he saw Tao. Chiaohtzu might be weaker than Tao though...maybe. He might be on par.

According to my own numbers via power scaling, Chaozu is at 90 while Tao is at 75. Chaozu seemed more impressive imo.

If Tenshinhan was that much above Tao though, I wonder why he didn't just see it obviously that he had surpassed Tao by a long shot.

It's not always easy to accept that you have surpassed a senpai. He probably knew, but didn't want to acknowledge it.

Tenshithands overrated Cyborg Tao as well. Gohan also had a hard time grasping that he surpassed his father.

He could just be overrating him because of his reputation.

Tao was his superior, though. He knew him personally.

It's a bit contradictory then, no? Tenshinhan saw Goku destroy Chappa who should be above Taopaipai and was still later shocked at the fact that Goku killed Taopaipai, which he'd have no reason to be if Goku already displayed a power greater than Taopaipai's.

Did he see the Chapa-O fight?

Considering Tenshinhan said Yamcha was probably the best the Turtle-School had to offer after his fight with him.

Honestly, I had just assumed he did but after going back and checking it's not actually shown. I concede then.

I guess one could argue Krillin's confidence against Goku after seeing him beat Chappa could place him (and by extension Chaozu on account of Chaozu not being too far off from Krillin) above Taopaipai.

Well, a simple way to draw a linear power chain from the Chappa-o debate is to argue that Roshi thought Goku would have a hard time despite seeing his power in person 3 years ago (and believing that he did improve even before the match). Who's stronger between Uranai Baba-arc Goku and Tao? :et
