I guess one could argue Krillin's confidence against Goku after seeing him beat Chappa could place him <small>(and by extension Chaozu on account of Chaozu not being too far off from Krillin)</small> above Taopaipai.
Which is weird, since before that Kuririn and Yamcha already were like o_O, when Goku fought Chapa-O, but it seemed to have changed.

I've seen some argue his confidence was because of Goku's tail weakness, but I don't abide by that since Krillin at least tried to put up a fight first and didn't instantly go for Goku's tail.

Yeah, he didn't immediately go for the tail, he even says something like Goku is just too good. Also just before the match he says something like, "I've trained a lot. I know I can win."

Chaozu gave Kuririn (who's stronger than Baba Goku) a tougher fight than Tao gave Goku, so yeah Chaozu wins. Tenshinhan was just shocked to know someone outside of the Crane School was capable of defeating him.

He called him invincible, though.

Invisible? I don't remember him saying that.
That's what I heard in the anime, I'm not sure whether that was in the manga.

He says something like "How could the invincible Tao-Pai-Pai-sama have been defeated?" or something like that, I think.

Here are the quotes I could find:

<small>Chapter: 120, P11.1-2
Context: Goku revealed that he defeated Taopaipai. Tenshinhan did not believe it.
Jackie Chun: “Did you really…take down Taopaipai…?â€￾
Goku: “Huh? You too, gramps? I did so! It wasn’t easy, though…him being so strong and all.â€￾
Jackie Chun: “Taopaipai…said to be the world’s Number One assassin…and this lad…he…he…â€￾

Chapter: 122, P12.3-6
Context: after Goku defeats Panput
Tenshinhan: “That wasn’t one blow. While brushing off his opponent’s fast punch with his right hand, with his left he showered him with…3 rapid-fire elbow blows…That brat, he’s no ordinary person.â€￾
Tsuru-sennin: “I see…maybe he really did defeat Tao Pai Pai…â€￾
Tenshinhan: “This tournament is finally getting interesting…â€￾
</small>

Nothing about Taopaipai being "invincible", though.

I swear it was in the anime. Maybe I could screen-shot. Also maybe Herms thought it was a hyperbole from Tenshinhan, and didn't bother including it.

Is it in the Viz version of the manga?

The way they are talking, it might as well say invincible. Though the shock leans more toward Goku than Tao-Pai-Pai.

Well, a simple way to draw a linear power chain from the Chappa-o debate is to argue that Roshi thought Goku would have a hard time despite seeing his power in person 3 years ago (and believing that he did improve even before the match). Who's stronger between Uranai Baba-arc Goku and Tao? :et
I didn't see this before, but now the question is Choazu stronger than Chapa-O?

I think he is, because Roshi refers to him as a superhuman opponent even Kuririn and Yamcha would struggle with, and Goku doesn't go back on his expectation that Kuririn should be stronger than Chappa-o.

I guess for the same reason he says <del>failcha</del> Yamcha's movements are faster than the naked eye can see even though he's become way faster :et :et

u mean from the 21st tb???

i guess it's a possibility that AT jst retconned tao or chapa-o's strength after he decided to raise the stakes, and make tao, tsuru-sennin's brother & master of tenshinhan & choazu

so he went from irrelevancy to relevancy again
