Male lions protect the pride.

This is because their prey is weaker than most of their intruders, such as other predator animals. So the strongest (males) stay with the pride to protect while the women go make dinner.

It's not just that, their manes severely hinder their ability to stand the heat as well, especially the overgrown manes.

Their manes protect them from injury in a fight though, so there's that.
