1. Vegeta also thought Zarbon wouldn't change much and he was totally caught off-guard. On top of that, him and Freeza are clearly different beings so thinking they're transformations would be the same is also stupid.
And Vegeta had no other reference point other than Zarbon to use, hence why it's logical that Zarbon would be his base reference for what to expect as far as increases goes.
Like I said, Vegeta couldn't even compete with Freeza in his first form much less his transformed states so he was basically gambling with their chances over his delusions of becoming a Super Saiyan.
Hence why letting Freeza wear him down in his first form when he had another transformation hidden away would be a fruitless endeavour.
2. That soldier was subservient to Freeza so he couldn't risk complying with the enemy.
And Gohan didn't even know who Freeza was. His only reference point for anything was the soldier still having the same armour as the Saiyans.
He was clearly out for blood.
So were plenty of opponents that the Z-Warriors have spared.
Also, Gohan and Krillin weren't that strong at the time so it's not like they can easily force the soldiers into submission.
They literally oneshotted them and didn't treat their power as a threat whatsoever. Hell, the soldiers were seemingly so inept at Ki use they relied on their blaster guns. It's obvious they could easily force them into submission.
Again, Gohan doesn't enjoy fighting like that and he's not a killer either so he can't just draw out said hidden powers in the mist of battle.
Irrelevant when he's still shown enough common sense to know he had to fight for those he wanted to protect in the past.
