Katakuri should get smoked here. His future sight might let him stay in the fight for a little longer, but power-wise he did nothing to prove that he could clash with Admiral or Yonko level people. Big Mom chose to avoid Marco in Wano because he was too troublesome to deal with. That speaks volumes.

Marco held off both King and Queen by himself, Katakuri gets his ass beat.

Did Marco purposely take a hands off approach at Wano? Did he want to let the younger pirates fulfill their potential? Is he Aristotle?

Kind of. He played a significant role by taking on both King and Queen until Zoro/Sanji were ready to take them on. He also helped contain the viral outbreaks from Queen's viruses that were spread to the samurai.

But yeah he knew he only had a supporting role there and was basically just stalling for time whenever he was active. He wanted the SHC to win it for themselves.
