I know they were using Conquerors Haki presumably but I find it a bit strange that Oden had to note that ''they aren't even touching each other!''. Shouldn't the concept of Flowing Haki (AKA level 2) be second nature to the samurai of Wano?

Level 2 Haki doesn't do that.

It simply emits the Haki externally. Level 2 Busoshoku allows you to project Haki at a very small distance from your body as seen in the image above. It can't do anything like what we see WB and Roger doing where their attacks repel each other at great distance. Oden and the Scabbards were all using level 2 Haki but their blades still cut Kaido physically. Haoshoku attacks land from a distance.

They projected their Haki field so much that it protected the entire execution platform.

Fair enough. I think it works differently defensively than offensively. Every time we've seen level 2 used offensively there is a minimal distance between the person's hand and the enemy. And as I said with swords, the swords are still making direct contact when level 2 is used. The difference here is that barrier had no offensive capabilities. Oden has never seen a clash of Haki without contact before as it would make no sense for two people to fight with defensive barriers.

Is the distance in that clash any bigger than what Rayleigh did against that elephant?

It would appear not. But it's as I said, that effect doesn't seem to happen with swords.

Not to mention Rayleigh seemed to use it in the same defensive manner that the Admirals did. Look at Sentomaru/Hyogoro's use of level 2 offensively and you'll see that they need to be very close to the enemy to emit their Haki into them.

Yea. The Haki isn't limited to strengthening your own body. It's emitted externally to combine with the hardening.

Well, regular hardening is limited to infusing your Haki into the weapon. If you're up against someone with extreme durability like Kaido or Big Mom, allowing the Haki to flow out of the sword and into their body would increase the damage output.

But I could've been looking at the Advanced Haoshoku incorrectly. It's possible that it's being used in combination with Level 2 Busoshoku which I hadn't thought of. I still don't think that would cause an inconsistency with Oden since swords don't create that same effect.

Worth noting that Kaido’s club seemingly doesn’t have the “not touching” effect that Luffy and Roger seem to have when using ACoC.

Kaido might have been exclusively using Haoshoku initially. We see both him and Big Mom being capable of having that effect in 1011.

This really reminds you of just how fucking unexplained Haki is as a concept.

Btw, Oden used ACoC against Kaido to leave that scar on him right?
