Whitebeard still takes it. He at least showed superiority over the Admirals. Garp seemed to be stalemating Aokiji and it's debatable whether or not Aokiji was going all out.

Just realised old means elderly and not "back in the day".

Yeh WB seems to take it, even ill. I will say WB was gravely injured by Akainu there, while Garp didn't get any big injuries against Aokiji. Maybe WB actually couldn't dominate Akainu so heavily without putting himself at risk of harm. If he fought in a way that doesn't get himself hurt, maybe it looks closer, like Garp vs Aokiji.

Another thing is Akainu was initially caught off guard. Imagine getting punched by an earthquake (possibly with haki) and then having to fight. He may have been discombobulated and been less able to fight intelligently and with his full abilities than if going 1 vs 1 without a surprise attack.

A third consideration is if Aokiji is stronger post-skip. I don't think he is, but I dunno. I'm guessing Akainu is stronger, being a serious person and because in OP characters peak at older ages. Aokiji is nonchalant pre-skip, but does have a serious mission now and is involved in risky situations, with no Marines for support. Maybe he's powered up. But he also is alsp having to replace a leg with ice, which could leave less power for other skills. Or that could've been another reason for him to work on powering up his haki, to protect his leg during fights.

But shouldn't they be relative in their primes? Unless you want to make the argument that WB is less taxed by his elder status since he's 4 years younger.

It's hard to say. Garp is the same age as Rayleigh who seemed to be struggling a lot more with stamina issues, although Rayleigh hadn't been active as a pirate for a long time.
