I have the first four volumes on the way. This will be not only my first experience reading a manga, but my first taste of OP as well.

So tell me about this story. I know One Piece is loved and well recieved. I'd like to hear what you guys think.

I am a massive One Piece fan. The story is very well written, especially for a battle Shonen. This is a gateway Manga I'd recommend to just about everyone. In fact, it might even set your bar too high for other manga, but don't let that discourage you.

The drawing might be average in the beginning and
Throughout the series there might be too much going on per page
but overall one of the better shounens out there easily
Like yoshi said your setting the bar pretty high
Don't wanna spoil anything but the story starts off pretty easy going
Nothing too intense for awhile but it gradually picks up
And gets more interesting as you read

Agreed with Yoshi. The manga is very well written for both plot and characters. Hell, recently even an otherwise obscure henchmen got fairly fleshed out compared to those in most other series. This is made even more impressive by there being very few unexplainable plot holes in a series that's over 77 volumes, which even other well written several-dozen volume long battle Shonen (eg. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Gintama, etc.) have a tough time doing.

As for actual volumes, I currently own volumes 1-34, 52, 54 and 58-74.

One Piece is the best shonen manga since Dragon Ball ended. Great art, a universe that is almost infinite with adventure, diverse and unique characters, good development among the cast and an extremely well written plot. I couldn't recommend One Piece more, even if I tried. When all's said and done, it will be among Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk as far as all time great shonen manga are concerned.

One Piece rulez.

Is that directed at anyone in particular?

For the current arc, I'd say it's still deserving of the hype it's story quality is being given, though the most recent few chapters have had very slow pacing.

Southern Gothic did say he bought the first four volumes, but I misread it and it actually said they were on the way. I'm just trying to be this forum's workhorse in activity is all.

Anyway, Dressrosa is a solid arc so far, but that's because I'm reading it volume by volume instead of a chapter every other week. Many people say reading Dressrosa would probably be better in bulk, anyway.

What's really awful is the Dressrosa Anime, though. It's really disappointing, but then again, it's Toei.

Not really surprising. OP's anime pacing as a whole has gone down a lot since after Marineford, but you can expect this not just because of Toei, but due to it constantly running weekly like it's manga.

The art is great, but so jumbled up at times... (at least for me)
I'll just stick with the anime. Thanks anyway...
(I do check it sometimes regardless though) Gear 4th was interesting.

Like Havoc said earlier, East Blue will most likely appear to be a weak start. Some like One Piece when it gets to Arlong Park, others will like it during Alabasta.

Thanks to whoever moved this here. Pretty rad to have the first topic(non pinned). I'll start reading tomorrow and hopefully contribute.<hr />I got to work an hour early so that I could just sit and start reading. I finished chapter one a moment ago. Very enjoyable so far. I know where Luffy gets his powers, which i didn't know he had.

The bar is set very low for stretchable characters, so he has the chance to take the #1 spot, ahead of Mr. Fantastic, Plastic Man, Elongated Man, and Stretch Armstrong.

Nice to see where he got that hat (shc ;) ).

At chapter 2 now. Luffy just punched a shark in the face. Boss.

OP is entertainment as it can be. The plot, world building, characters are really good.

Altough the current arc is slow paced and a clusterfuck.

Finished volume 1 and now ready to move on to the next one.

Honestly that was a lot of fun with some outlandish characters. Of course I mean that in a good way. Luffy breaking Zoro out of prison was a whole lot of fun. Axe-Hand Morgan may be my favorite character despite being short lived. Dude just had an awesome design.

Volume 2 has promised another person who ate from the devil's fruit. This notion has raised my expectations, and I can't wait to meet this clown pirate.

Also, three swords, Zoro? I immediately created a fanfiction story in my head that has Zoro dying somewhere down the line and becoming General Grevious.
