Also, three swords, Zoro? I immediately created a fanfiction story in my head that has Zoro dying somewhere down the line and becoming General Grevious.

Volume 2. Halfway through this one. An interesting chapter, as the first half kept Luffy locked up, giving Zoro and Nami some development time.

Buggy the Clown is insane. He makes AH Morgan look like Ben Stien. I find it impossible to hear anybody else but Tim Curry when I read this guys lines.

New Favorite character : Chouchou the Dog. This guy broke my heart.

Events such as with Chouchou will become even more common as you continue with the series. The tragic elements in OP with character backstories and the like are often featured, especially with the main cast. This is even better when contrasting with the series' generally happy art style, adding to it's unique flavour.

In regard to Buggy's voice, it's also worth noting that in the FUNimation dub, his voice actor's portrayl of him was based on Mark Hamill's role as The Joker in one of the animated Batman films.

While it is early, I am having a better time of reading Romance Dawn. The first volume was fun. Now that I know some of these guys, there are is a more invested in their actions. Like you said CC, emotions, and those emotions are starting to become more defined and real.
Luffy is a good protagonist, and his goals and outlook are on life are clear and spelled out.

Is it Zoro or Zolo? The books switched it up on me.

Zoro is his official name, as shown in two of the anime openings. Zolo was the translation used by 4kids. Due to them owning the rights for OP at the time Viz Media started translating the manga, they switched it to Zolo after the first volume, also changing it for volume 1 in their Vizbig 3-in-1 edition and have gone with that name ever since. FUNimation's dub and sub of the anime, however, stick with his official name of Zoro.

Finished Volume 2.

Not much in the way of the story for the last bit. Mostly action. I approve this, as the development is certainly there to justify some care free violence. Zoro and Luffy take on Buggy's crew. Zoro is badass as always, and Luffy gets his moments in to.

It ends with Luffy and Buggy prepairing for a showdown. Nice cliffhanger.

As a tip, once you get volume 3, it might be a better alternative financially to buy the Vizbig 3-in-1 editions, since they cost less than 2 individual volumes. So far, they've got this edition for volumes 1-36. The only real downside is the lack of complete volume covers, but that's about it.

I already have Volume 1-4. They came together used when I bought them. Does your recommendation still stand considering this?

It's hard to say. Usually I buy them in store, where it's hard to tell if any copie's been used or not. The prices are also printed on the back, making no difference between new and used books there.

Well, I plan on finishing the four I own, since I spent the money. If I continue reading, should I switch to the 3 in 1?

Thats 3 volumes per set right? So I would need to pick up two more individually, and make the change?

The used book store near me has a whole section of them. I bought mine on ebay, but I could get the solo volumes until 6 and then go to the 3 in 1.

Lastly, how is the overall quality of the 3 in 1? Bout the same?

Sorry, lots of questions, but this is my first manga experience, and it is completely innocent. Never saw the show, know nothing of it outside of this thread. So if I kept reading I would want to do it right.

I'd recommend you do that. As far as I'm aware, there's no actual translation difference between the two versions, other than swapping the name Zoro for Zolo for the 3-in-1's entirety, rather than just starting from volume 2.

Moving on to Volume 3. Luffy and Buggy go at it and the crew leaves town. I didn't think a fight between two indestructible people would be that interesting. It was. When Luffy kicked Buggy's lower half in the balls, I got Pepsi up my nose.

Glad to see Chouchou get a character bio in the beginning of the book. ;)

The rest of Vol 3 fell a bit flat for me. That's not to say it was bad, more so that I was feeling a lot of fluff towards the middle here. There was a bit where Luffy and company landed on an island that was inhabited by the one pirate who was trapped in a treasure box. I apologize for forgetting his name. Anyway, this was kind of cute but ultimately felt like filler.

Once they moved on and got to the next place, I didn't love the characters. I got a bit more interested towards the end. For one, the Hypnotist was introduce. Almost immediately he put Luffy to sleep, and I liked this, because no other antagonists have been able to hurt Luffy, making this guy more of a threat.

The unfolding murder plot with the butler is also becoming interesting.

Volume 4 is finally finished, as I put it down moments ago. This was a fantastic volume in my opinion. Lot's of action, with most of the main characters taking turns at thwarting the plan to murder Miss Kaya. The new antagonists were great and menacing, including Django, Captian Kuro and the Meowban Bros.

All in all, the story was action packed, the pacing was good, and the conflict felt read with a lot riding on Luffy and Co.'s success. My favorite part was easlily Zoro vs the Meowban Bros. Great battle. I still don't like Usopp though. I think it's just the silly character design, he comes off as a chump.

Thus ends my introduction into One Piece. I enjoyed it, and have come to like a lot of the characters. It's nice to be more familiar with a world that so many people have come to love. Also felt good breaking my manga cherry for the first time.

I suppose I will have to pick up Vol. 5 down the road. Not only does the series justify continued reading at this point, but I would like to finish off the story of the Black Cat Pirates.

I understand that this is slightly unrelated to this particular sentence, but you said "world" which got me thinking about the series's world building. It's really fuckin' good. Most battle shounens just leave it at "here's the main place(s) and here are some other places, many of which you'll never see." OP on the other hand touches on not only what their world is like, but how it operates and how it's been affected by the past, and it does so in..a good way (dunno how else to put it).
