Flame said:I don't see how. Yes, they did a lot. But as I addressed, it was practically all for naught. Such as the battle against Youpi.
I edited my response. The battle against Youpi did contribute to character development on all sides, and allowed Youpi to grow strong enough to save Meruem. :mikey
Now for Yu Yu...
Everything before Dark Tournament is a mostly hazy mess. But I can comment on the start of the Spirit Detective arc where Yusuke was run over and had to do good deeds. I did initially like that arc, but it dragged on for 18 chapters of Yusuke doing good deeds, and hammering home the point that Yusuke was a super awesome good kid.
That's all I have to say about it.
Onto Dark Tournament!
My biggest gripes with this tournament is how hyped I was for it, and perhaps Yu Yu as a whole. I initially had heard that Yu Yu was even better than Hunter x Hunter, and was one of the greatest Shonen ever made.
But when the Dark Tournament rolled around it was just a by the books tournament, there's nothing really unique about it, nothing really creative about it. And it dragged on for far too long, dealing with so many battles, most of didn't contribute to the story or plot in any meaningful way. I liked Younger Brother Torugo, he was fleshed out and had many shades, ironically enough I consider him a superior version of what Jiren is.
The ending was where it started to fall apart, gutting itself by reversing the death of Genki, revealing that Kuwabara was never killed, and the whole random power up reserved for Yuusuke which was never foreshadowed or mentioned before it was convenient, making it very cheap.
The Sensui arc I consider to be a step up for the most part. I was initially in love with it's whole approach of skills/abilites > power message that it went with during the early stages of the part with the dollar a dime stands. This was perfectly shown in the Taboo Words power, where half of the group was immobilised, and Kurama had to defeat Yu Kaito through wit and cunning.
The arc did ultimately shit it's pants with this message during the finale. Revealing that Sensui was actually billions of times more powerful than anyone before hand, and that Yuuske had to get billions of times stronger in another convenient way. Beyond that the arc also asspulled Yusuke into being a secret descendent of a demon. I did also appreciate the darker tone the Sensui arc went with.
