The manga tries to explain it on the technicality of the dragon just releasing Granolah's full potential that he'd be able to naturally acquire over time rather than adding anything extra. I can somewhat buy this since there was no reason for it to be brought up as a possibility prior (especially when both allies and enemies of the Dragon Team alike would probably take a pass on something that drastically reduces one's lifespan, though it does devalue Rou-Dai Kaioshin's ritual even more than Super's average power creep already had with how much of an ant the zenith of potential that Ultimate Gohan supposedly was is by comparison.
