I don't think Future Trunks can rival Yardrat Goku.

Yeah, I generally do have future Trunks at 88% of Yardrat Goku. I don't know whether you consider that rivaling, but it should basically mean that Goku can clobber Trunks as easily as Vegeta did Zarbon. As long as Goku is noticeably ahead, it seems fine to me.

The gap can't be so outstanding though because Goku got really scared upon knowing there were foes that made short work out of Trunks, plus Goku stated he should train very hard for this upcoming threat upon merely knowing those opponents were monsters to Trunks, which should IMO mean he isn't a God to [mecha saga] Trunks, not anything like Goku vs Ginyus or Vegeta vs Cui. Maybe Vegeta vs Dodoria at most IMO.

There's really no way around that ahill. Gero makes it clear the added humans power is somewhere on par with Piccolo's power. It doesn't get much simpler than this.

Trunks is too close to. Yardrat Goku. Trunks said Goku was even better than the rumors. And he was already expecting someone that obviously surpassed him.

Maybe Trunks was expecting Goku to be = him, but was surprised he was already > him. Remember, Bulma stated that Goku's an amazing person and that with Goku they'd definitely get to change 'their fate'. So he is expecting to find someone with a great potential to solve things, someone really strong.

Trunks has SSJ at least since he was 14... now he is 17. Sure finding someone who hasn't even 2 years of experience as a SSJ and finding that person is already as strong as him should be already amazing, right? Oh wait, he is even stronger, this person is even better than I expected!

That's basically how I look into the situation. Trunks still knew Yardrat Goku was still a work in progress. He knew Goku would spent 3 years training and that that power would be the one he'd be clinging on. So Goku being like 1.1x above Trunks there works for me. I like to see [Yardrat] Goku's gap over Trunks as the same gap Goku had over Trunks 3 years later.

Trunks was expecting not only someone stronger than him but perhaps significantly stronger than him. Bulma and Gohan talked about Goku like he was a demi god.
