It was a terrible decision, considering it left some of the best storylines cut from the series would've been some of the best, such as the Dark Disciple arc involving Ventress and Quinlan Vos or the conclusion taking place in Order 66.GreatSaiyaman123 said:Since we mentioned TCW's cancellation, do you think it was worth it to cancel TCW for the sake of Rebels? Is Rebels good?
Rebels had a few aspects that were good, but were mainly just the return of TCW characters like Ahsoka, Rex and Maul, along with famous OT characters like Vader, Tarkin, Lando, etc. As far as the storylines involving it's own cast go, it was pretty bad due to overall having a very childish tone compared to it's predecessor. Rather than having an ensemble cast and given a dozen characters the spotlight, the protagonist is basically a whiny kid who makes immature jokes and switches his personality so much even the hardcore fans of the series hate Ezra. Sabine is essentially some tumblrette's fanfic character of some dyed haired Mandalorian who was an ex bounty/Imperial operative and has so many skills that if she didn't lose pretty often, she'd be almost as much of a Mary Sue as Rey. Zeb and Chopper don't really have much going for them beyond being a token alien and droid. Amongst the Ghost Crew, the only decent characters were Kanaan and Hera as they act far more mature by playing a parental role, often juggling between their relationship and missions, yet we don't see as much of their interactions as we do with other characters.
Moving on to the actual plot, Season 1 is basically just a bunch of hijinks of this Rebel crew beating the Empire in a few minor missions and taking on the Grand Inquisitor; who whilst Vader's top trained agent, doesn't like up to his hype when he's forced to retreat in a lot of battles against two Jedi who basically amount to Padawan and Youngling tier, ruining the main threat of the season. Season 2 is noticeably better due to bringing Ahsoka into some storylines, which helps make the finale an excellent episode, but other than that there's only a few that can be called good and a lot that can be called boring. Season 3 is better due to Thrawn being brought in and absolutely demolishing the cast on many occassions, but the episodes just focusing on the Ghost Crew are still bad and the interesting storyline of Maul tracking down Kenobi is ruined by their presence. Finally, Season 4 is a huge step down from the previous one due to some SJW elements at the start with the warrior culture of Mandalorians consisting almost entirely of women at this point, Force Sensitive wolves acting as a huge plot device for the main cast; the support cast, whilst still playing their role in the climax, do so in a way that makes the Empire feel more incompetent than ever and Thrawn basically losing to Space Whales. Worst of all, it also brings in time travel to make the continuity far less consistent. It's finale is also a rushed work, with it having a timeskip to just after RotJ and leaving a lot of things unexplained in it's final scene.
To conclude, Rebels does have some good episodes if you watch those involving already established characters in the franchise, but is a complete letdown from TCW and otherwise a bad series.
4/10
It isn't much of a major change, but the shading looks a lot better (perhaps somewhat due to the darker tone typical in anime art of the 90s) and character eyes are slightly less wide. Here's a comparison:Super Saiyan said:Can you expand on what you mean by the art being more "mature"?
