This is Trunks from the flashback when Gohan knocked him out. Can he beat 100% Freeza?

SSJ Trunks was weaker than Base Gohan. Freeza (No Hands) stomps, let alone 50 or 100% Freeza.

But Trunks was confident in helping Gohan fight the Androids? And Gohan was confident that he would be left in the dust within a few months? That doesn't add up.

How badly? I don't see why Trunks can't be approaching that level of power.
Well, I've the SSJ shrinking to a 10x multiplier post the Freeza fight. Since Trunks SSJ was at most stalemating a base Gohan, then I can't see him as that strong.

Namek Freeza 140,000,000
Mecha Freeza 160,000,000
SSJ Gohan (1 arm) 180,000,000
Base Gohan -- 18,000,000
SSJ kid Trunks -- 16,000,000

I just don't see it that way. When the flashback begins we see that Trunks is at the end of his training and is completely exhausted. We don't know the context as to how that situation happened. Gohan was seemingly still fresh so it seems like the emphasis was on Trunks' training and not Gohan. It's possible that Trunks had already been in Super Saiyan for a long time and had the majority of his energy drained.

Trunks was insistent on helping Gohan fight the androids despite being exhausted. Clearly he was thinking with his emotions there but I can't see him being so ready to fight the Androids if he's weaker than Base Gohan at full power. SSJ Gohan barely escaped the androids when he had 2 arms which Trunks is aware of. That coupled with Gohan's statement about Trunks surpassing him in the near future makes me doubt that Trunks could be that weak. It's a similar statement to Gohan saying Goten/Trunks could overtake him soon if he wasn't careful, and we saw that they weren't all that far from Gohan's level.

Well, that's one way to look at it, but don't you think it'd be pointed out if Gohan started training in SSJ and then regressed to base? All we have is base Gohan fending off SSJ Trunks relatively easy. Trunks also had his aura up for the exchange, so I also wonder if he was THAT weakened. Gohan stated that Trunks could surpass him in a few months iirc but he was counting with him being around to tutor Trunks during that time. When his survival was put in check he changed that to "sometime you'll beat those monsters" or "within a few years" or so. In fact, Trunks only surpassed Gohan in 3 years time. So I think he had a long bridge to close.

I think Trunks just thought that he could be of some assistance in any way. Besides, wanting to help no matter what seems to be a trend among the warriors. I could see Kid Trunks thinking like Tenshinhan later on, the latter which wanted to test his strength against the androids even if he wasn't up to the challenge. Gohan knocking him down and making him wait all this time speaks louder imo, as in, he has to develop his strength and think rationally if he wants to stand any chance.

I think what he means is that the exchange between Gohan and Trunks was more like someone using boxing pads for someone else to practice their punches/kicks on. It wasn't necessarily a back and forth sparring match between the two.

He was also confident in beating both androids 3 years later. His confidence is even less founded here than his confidence in beating Cell since his Ki was technically bigger than suppressed Cell at least.

Gohan also had an aura when doing basic training and then immediately regressed to Base because the strain was too much for him:

This is pretty much what we see with Trunks, and it's likely this is just what happens when you aren't fully accustomed to Super Saiyan yet. Gohan at this point should be far stronger than Freeza and yet the form was still that hard on him. I don't see why we should use this as a knock on Trunks when it's highly possible that Super Saiyan was draining everything he had. Base Gohan might've been ahead of him at that exact moment, or it could be like what @Future Warrior said in that Gohan was just teaching Trunks the basics and it wasn't true sparring.

Trunks surpassed Gohan after 3 years of solo training. We saw that he was very inexperienced against Gohan so it makes sense that it took 3 years for him to surpass that level, even if he wasn't all that far off to begin with.

I mean sure, of course he would want to help regardless. The point is that there was a statement from himself about being far stronger now which seems idiotic to include if he's below Base Gohan. Gohan knocking him out is what made sense. Gohan knew it was a suicide mission and that Trunks would have been killed. What was he supposed to do?

The weakest Super Saiyan in canon gets stomped.

@Super Saiyan

That's a good catch, but remember that Vegeta also reverted down to base after destroying #19 and he had enough power to wipe #19's ass beforehand with a SSJ. So I don't think automatically reverting down to base necessarily means you were very low on SSJ usage. Gohan was also not used to SSJ yet back then, so keeping the form on would be an additional stress. If the exercise was over for the moment, I don't see the harm in catching a breath in his more natural, base state.

Trunks may just have been caught on the improvement he got and let himself get carried away. Similarly, Kibitoshin was also carried away by his Potara and thought he'd be of help against Boo, until Elder Kai shut him.

Man the manga version of History of Trunks sucks.

Anyways, even assuming that Trunks was simply drained of all his energy, I still have him losing quite soundly. I don't think that Future Gohan should eclipse Namek Goku by too much, and Trunks was still quite a ways off from Gohan at that point. Even assuming he has the power to take him out, Freeza fights dirty and almost certainly has Trunks beat in skill and sheer amount of techniques.

All in all, even with the most optimistic power I'm willing to give Trunks, Freeza still wins.

It makes no sense for Gohan to think Trunks would become 50x+ stronger within a few months. I think we should ignore the manga sparring session, which makes no sense, and give that Trunks a more reasonable SSJ level.

Freeza. Even if assuming SSJ Trunks > Base Gohan, I don’t see Trunks surpassing even King Cold. It doesn’t help that he also lacks the fighting experience to take on someone stronger than him.
