Bandit Keith was only #1 in America. Things differ between the English and Japanese versions for other characters. The "Duel Monsters World Champion" term is only present in the 4kids dub. In the Japanese version it was the Japanese National Duel Monsters Champion. Kaiba was the champion prior to losing to Yugi and encountering shenanigans with his company. After he lost, Weevil won the next tournament, but he never actually beat Kaiba or Yugi.

According to the wiki, being the Japanese champ was synonymous with being the King of Games. I'm not quite sure how that works when the game originated in America, where Keith was #1, but either way.

I think it’s BS that Kaiba would lose his #1 position without losing to Weevil in a duel. His duel with Yugi was unofficial so it shouldn’t have changed anything.

It sort of makes sense. KaibaCorp's reputation basically relied a great deal on Kaiba being the best in Japan. With Kaiba not being the best, investors started to get cold feet (made worse in the manga where Kaiba was in a coma for 6 months after the duel). This meant Yugi was the guy to beat, so in order for Pegasus to become the CEO of KaibaCorp (with the Big 5's help), he needed to defeat Yugi, hence creating Duelist Kingdom. It sounds stupid from our point-of-view, but in a world where Duel Monsters is big enough that Kaiba can take over an entire large city for a single tournament, it's not farfetched at all.

It doesn't have to be an official duel for someone to lose their title, but I guess it depends on the situation. Kaiba didn't consider his duel with Yugi at Duelist Kingdom a true win, despite technically winning, so he had that motivation in Battle City. In the filler Doma arc, Yugi lost to Rafael and Kaiba flipped his shit because of this.

Also, Kaiba dropped out of the tournament that Weevil eventually won because of his loss to Yugi, so everyone would know about it.

Watched episode 4 last night. Yugi vs Weevil was somewhat entertaining considering Yugi started at such a huge disadvantage. I'm curious as to how Pegasus was careless enough to leave a copy of the rules in a place where Weevil could steal them

In the manga, Weevil said Pegasus gave him a preview of the Duelist Kingdom rules, probably for being the Japanese champ. Where was it said Weevil stole the rules in the anime?

I must have missed it before, but on the ship ride to DK, Weevil admitted he couldn't truly call himself the best without beating Yugi and Kaiba. Hard to tell if he was being a smug dick or honest, but it makes sense.

I'm pretty sure he said he stole a copy of the rules. I'll check later.

Pyro you were right. The sub has Weevil saying Pegasus directly gave him the rules. The dub says he stole a copy. :facepalm

iirc the 1st episode is of the duel-monsters anime was a weird amalgamation of a-lot of pre-duelist-kingdom stuff. in the manga the grand-pa was hospitalised because kaiba made the monsters "real", like yami yugi did against him in the first duel which turned him crazy. i don't think in the anime there's any real explanation, l0l.

I tried to rewatch this a while back but it was so shitty I stopped at episode 4. Don’t see how I watched this as a kid.

After finding out how bad The Rise of Skywalker is, I'd say Super (or hell, anything that has at least one decent idea) becomes pretty tolerable by comparison :troll2

Joey's luck hinges on Time Wizard a lot in this arc, so be ready for more of that. Lol.
