Was Tao also a lot stronger in his younger days? Everyone is incredibly surprised that Goku was able to defeat him during the 22nd.

I'd think so. If really going by what the 22nd Tournament implies, he might have been at-least been 22nd Tournament Master-Roshi level.

Yeah, like isn't Roshi in complete shock? Maybe he didn't expect Tao to have weakened, so that's why he's surprised.

Maybe Master-Roshi only knows him by reputation, since he does call him by his title, "the world's greatest assassin" or something instead of referring specifically to his power. Even-though since he knew Tsuru-sen'nin it's possible he also saw him.

I think he could at-least be Master-Roshi level since Tsuru-sen'nin thought it was possible he could have been defeated after seeing Goku use his full Match-Level.

Ye. Plus, you think if Roshi knew him, he would have recanted some kind of story to Goku, about the time that he and Tao met. But instead, he is really vague about it, leaving me to think Roshi only knows the name and not the man.

So Goku surpassed Young Roshi, but not Mutaito, correct?

It's possible. It's left rather vague, but he does also say that he was young back-then so it has to mean something. At the same-time though he doesn't put nearly the emphasis to him and Tsuru-sen'nin as he does to Master-Mutaito (with the even) which makes it possible that Goku is higher.

Master roshi could also be partially shocked about the fact behind what goku did. Which is kill the brother of crane.

@2kewl4u does reputation take away from Goku's feats against Chappa?

I don't think it does. Nothing seems to point that way. They do seem to know of Chapa-o because of his reputation, but he is never said to be a joke.

Good posts 2kewl4u

Like 2kewl4u said, prime Taopaipai being at 22nd Budôkai Kame-Sen'nin looks about right, since when Goku showed his full match level Tsuru-Sen'nin considered the possibility of Tao being defeated plausible enough and full match level Goku was probably a little bit stronger than 22nd Kame-Sen'nin.

Where do you have prime Roshi and Tsuru, Zoro and 2kewl4u?

I'd say they are higher than Goku, but that's just me. Probably unnecessary for most, though and that doesn't really need to be.

It also helps if they are higher that they are quite a-bit higher than Tao, if we go by him being on-par with 22nd Tenkaichi-Budokai Master-Roshi, just like in the present. And also might explain Master-Roshi's surprise at Goku defeating him, if he did know him (which I don't think has to be).

That's Kame-Sen'nin line, according to Viz:

"Even younger, I was no match form him. Nor was Tsuru-Sen'nin. Nor even our master, Lord Mutaito."

The "even younger" line heavily implies young Roshi > 22nd Roshi, with Mutaito being even stronger than that. But considering we think there's a pretty considerably difference between 22nd Goku and 22nd Roshi, they could still be weaker than Goku, no?

Like I said there's no need for them to be higher. Even-though in the original only Master-Mutaito was said with even.

"Even younger" (young Roshi > 22nd Roshi)
"Even our master" (master Mutaito > young Roshi > 22nd Roshi)
"You're the farthest a human could go" (Goku vs daimao > Mutaito > young Roshi > 22nd Roshi)

If Goku didn't get a Zenkai, the gap between 22nd Goku and Roshi should be pretty big. Do you think there's such gap?

"Even Younger" can also mean he is higher than Goku.

Yeah, I already think Master-Roshi is a distant 3rd at the 22nd Tenkaichi-Budokai.
