I've made a similar topic in Neoseeker some time ago, but I'd like to hear your opinion about it. I personally believe that the manga is canon and that the anime isn't. Why ? As I don't intend to influence your vote, my reasons are in spoilers.

* Many people believe that the manga is simply an adaptation of the anime the same way the anime was for the original manga. Needless to say, the stark differences in the stories, as well as well as the date of release (the manga was out earlier than the anime) are enough to prove otherwise. The manga version is basically Toriyama giving a script to Toyotaro, who fills the blanks. Same for Anime version, but replace Toyotaro with Toei Animation.

* The Anime include fillers from DBZ (for example, Bulma talks about the time Ginyu stole her body...which never happened in the manga) as well as fillers from its own series to the canon (Goku mentionned Copy-Vegeta when Vegeta was beating up Goku Black). The manga is only about the canon stuff. The RoF manga is included in Toyotaro's canon as well, as Whis mentionned Golden Frieza in chapter 5.

* The manga is supervised by Toriyama more than it is for the anime...and it shows. For example, Zamasu actually displaying a god's abilities in the manga, while in the anime, his only technique was his ki blade...

* The original work (THE canon) is a manga. Toyotaro's work is a manga. Therefore, Toyotaro's manga is canon :). The reasoning works for anime being non-canon as well.

What is canon to you, the manga or the anime ?

Both are "canon". This time around the anime and manga are in different continuites with both following Toriyama's outlines and rolling with them in their own way. The anime is just more filler heavy with all the Slice of life episodes in-between but I doubt the important things from the anime like Goku vs Black in the past and Goku vs Zamasu were "filler".

The manga, simply because that's where Toriyama's ideas /story with a little changes from Toyotaro unlike the anime where Toei's BS plays a huge role of the story but the script is still Toriyama.

The manga because Toriyama is more involved working with Toyotarō than with Toei and the amount of fillers in Z being mentioned in the anime.

The manga isn't entirely canon in the same sense the original manga was, but it's a step closer than the anime (which isn't too different from Z in my book).

Neither, but I'd put the manga ahead due to lack of Toei filler.

It seems as though both are meant to be canon in some sense, with each filling in details not present in the other. If I had to pick between the two, however, I'd side with the manga being the more canon route due to it having more of an emphasis on expanding on it's concepts and events than the anime did, particularly for the Future Trunks Arc, which is being portrayed immensely better in the manga.

Neither. The manga is closer, though.

By the end of the day, it's a curb-stomp in the manga's favor. Does nobody think that the Anime is canon ?

The Super Anime is canon to Dragon Ball Kai, hence the filler flashbacks and shit like Gregory and Trunks turning SSj in the tv special. The Dragon Ball Super manga is a continuation of the Dragon Ball manga (or at least a spin-off of it) cause it has neither those things.

You should have an option for ''a mixture of both''. There are some things explained better in the manga and the same
goes for some other things in the anime.

Only the parts in both running verbatim AT's script notes. Kinda like how Bardock and Freeza blowing up Planet Vegeta are canon, but the Bardock specials aren't.

Well, some consider the entire special canon. Considering AT's reaction to the movie, "So that's how it happened..." It's quite reasonable to take the entire special as canon.

He retconned it all with Dragon Ball Minus, though...

Interesting, I'll check it out eventually. I generally think that young AT was the genius and old AT is the loon, but you never know.

Thanks I appreciate it, I just don't have the time to give it it's just due right now. Time is very limited for me right now, trying to keep things nice and light. By the way, who are you? Everyone changes their name every five seconds around here, I can't keep up.
