I too thought Goku realising how Grand-Pa Gohan died was sad.

it's sad because he was super proud and had been telling himself his whole life he was destined for greatness and that narcissism had driven through extreme hardships (death of father, working for Freeza, bullied by Cui etc, battle with Goku, battles with Zarbon and Recoome, carrying out his plans all alone to steal the dragon balls from Freeza even though any sane person would stay the fuck away if they knew of), but in that moment, even though he'd always managed to motivate himself when those around him didn't believe in him (except maybe Nappa and Raditz, but even when they were absent he was still able to stay mentally galvanised) he was finally broken and moved to tears, realising he would never fulfil what he felt was his purpose in life and what he'd been working towards for over 20 years.
