Trunks was not ESS2 against Black?

I think Trunks not being Enhanced SS2 against Black might make the powers scaling more easier and lengthens the gap between characters. Maybe Trunks couldn't use ESS2 because of his condition at the time (Being underfed and being too damaged from his previous encounters with Black). It also makes sense when taking into consideration that Vegeta only mentioned that he saw how Trunks couldn't have won against Black after turning Super Saiyan.

Was it ever implied ESSJ2 and SSJ2 are different things? I always though Trunks just was much stronger than Goku in equal forms.

Vegeta says SS2.5 Trunks is equal to SS3 Goku. Goku tells Trunks he is amazing and Trunks replies with "It was nothing to Black." So, yeah.

What led you to believe that he was talking about his Base form in that statement?

According to the Viz translation Trunks never specifically said why or when Black stopped using SS1 against Trunks, he just says ''Haven't seen that in a while...''. It's not entirely out of the question to say that it was quite a while since he last fought Black before Chapter 15. Plus Trunks might not have been in perfect condition to turn ESS2 at that point too.

Black admits to abusing Trunks for zenkais, and he ends up getting so strong that he no longer needs to fight Trunks as a Super Saiyan...

That's just your own interpretation. The fact that Vegeta says he saw how Trunks couldn't have won AFTER Black transforms heavily implies Base Black wasn't as powerful. Both stances are equally valid.

But we literally see Black 2-shot an enraged SS2 Trunks. What reason would Trunks have to hold back? His mother is dead, and he thinks he just lost Mai. I don't see how Trunks wouldn't have been at his full power.

I'd imagine Trunks not being able to use his full potential in battle due to not being in the right state of health (Being underfed, getting beaten up by Black with each encounter, and only being healed up by the scarce amount of medicine earth has to offer). That was literally the point I was trying to make in my opening post...

Why wouldn't he used his strongest form when his life is depended on it? The story is quite clear that SSjin Black > SSjin2 Trunks then with Black powered up with lots of Zenkais which made Black base form > SSjin2 Trunks as the beginning of the chapter.
