I believe he was. The scene was meant to hype up Rayleigh which wouldn't have meaning if Kizaru wasn't trying.

Why wouldn't he be? Ray has to be one of the most wanted men alive and he was annoyed at the Supernova getting away.

Blackbeard also didn't want to take on the risk of fighting Rayleigh, even knowing how old he was now. Rayleigh tells us he wouldn't have a chance to beat Blackbeard, but he's still relevant enough to appear threatening. Being able to challenge Kizaru lines up with that.

Was he any more serious against G4/G5 Luffy?

Damn, Rayleigh is cool. I wish I was him. What do I need to do? I already have glasses.

Do you think Rayleigh likes fighting? Does he still feel amazing fighting? He lives a quiet life usually. Is it just a practical matter for him to threaten Blackbeard and fight Kizaru? He had to have had a passion for it before, to get so good as a swordsman. Does he partly miss his era of fighting regularly? Or would he not go back to it, even if he could?
