Their consciousness can be put into an object. Like a DF, or a ship. Or into their mechanical parts if turned into a cyborg, like Kuma.

If Big Mom isn't a bucaneer, I doubt Whitebeard is. He was just a chubby kid. Drank a lot of milk all day (white moustache is a homage to that).
