Were the Cell Jr.s playing-around against Vegeta & Trunks?

What besides three panels of Piccolo standing (whatever he might have been doing, he was just standing) and maybe Cell's ambiguous line shows Piccolo even got all that high?

There's also Trunks being surprised at Goku saying Piccolo was useless against Cell.

He was most likely being surprised by Goku's bluntness. He didn't even say something like "Even Piccolo is useless?!?!?!". Which would have helped this point much more.

By the reason Tapion mentioned, I find that unlikely. He also witnessed Goku being very blunt with Vegeta not too long ago, so his shock being at Piccolo's lack of use is more likely.

Oh, I gotcha. Personally, I don't think that'd be necessary as even if he was around 50% Goku (I have him slightly weaker but closing in), that level of power isn't really relevant to Cell at all. I don't think there'd be any reason to place so much importance on a level of power close to 50% Goku when that level of power was already established to be useless against Cell. (I hope I am explaining well. I can try to explain differently if you don't understand what I mean).

Also, I think that the point HUEBR_Tapion and ahill1 were trying to make is that Trunks knew Goku was going to be blunt, since Piccolo told him to. Unless you're arguing back that Trunks is surprised at how blunt Goku is being; which, in that case, I disagree, but it is certainly open to interpretation.

Yeah, I got that. I still think that even-though Goku thought he was useless against Cell, everyone-else still held Goku's power in high regard upto that point. Didn't Goku tell them he probably can't beat Cell after Piccolo went into the RoSaT, but before he came-out? So Piccolo already knew even 50% Goku was useless, before Goku told them.

Also Vegeta said that there'd be no point in Piccolo using the RoSaT two times, because only Saiyans can step into that region apparently. That seems like a fairly clear indication that Vegeta doesn't think Piccolo can get anywhere near his potential Cell-Games power or 50% Goku.

Before Piccolo went for a trip in the Rosat, Goku already had told he won't know until he tries, but he probably couldn't win. Right after it, Goku displayed his 1/2 power to Karin tell how he compares to Cell. Goku even had the intention of going full power, but Karin told him to stop, otherwise he'd break his build, and also because AT wanted everyone to be surprised at the Cell Games. Up until that point, nobody had realized Goku was hiding even more power and were guessing Cell to be a step above what Goku showed. Piccolo most likely realized it in his year in the Rosat and Trunks realized it after witnessing Piccolo's conv with Goku, where he was shocked at Piccolo being useless, which might indicate Piccolo was around 50% of Goku's power IMO, who nobody thought to be useless. Vegeta probably realized Goku was hiding power after his 2nd year in the Rosat, since he told "show me what you can do, Kakarot", even though they didn't expect Goku's full power to be so massive.

Honestly I'm still not sure what puts Piccolo even close to even half-power Goku. A lot of the evidence just seems too up-to interpretation.
