Is this in Japan? So the HxH manga was way more popular than one of the American "big three" (Bleach) and about even with another (Naruto).

Well, looking again at the dates it seems HxH was released way less often, which makes Naruto's sales way more impressive.

Here are some French (one of the biggest manga markets) sales figures. HxH is nowhere to be seen and Bleach did well eventually, but never was in the top 10 volume list:

https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1389877#msg40161057 - Bleach usually loses to FMA, Death Note, Naruto, OP and Dragon Ball until 2009 (even though DB had been finished for 10+ years). Bleach's anime started airing in France in 2007, whereas FMA aired in 2005, so I guess Bleach had a disadvantage there. But even after that FMA's individual volumes outsold it and Bleach was only in 5th place in 2010 (behind Naruto, OP, Fairy Tail and DB).

France in 2011: https://www-du9-org.translate.goog/...auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wap - Bleach isn't in the top 50 even once. Neither is HxH actually.

France in 2015: https://www-lefigaro-fr.translate.g...uto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp - Top 5 are: OP 1.35 Million; FT 930,000; Naruto 650,000; AoT 400,000; Bleach 230,000

I'd like to see sales for Korea, USA, Taiwan, Canada, Philippines, Chile, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and China (although some manga are banned there, like AoT and Death Note).

I’d have to check for BLEACH, but yeah considering HxH is rivalling NARUTO, one’d assume it’s above it. I think HxH’s are more impessive if anything (in a weird way), even with-out an anime after awhile it kept-up with NARUTO & surpassed it at-times. Even in 2003, when the NARUTO anime premiered at the end of 2002.

Oh yeh that's true about no anime. To keep 1.5M dedicated fans is really good without an anime. Though, HxH didn't seem to get much of a boost from the 2011 anime. I looked up the Japanese animation DVD sales for 2011-2013 and HxH is never in the top 50, whereas Naruto always is. I don't know what channel and time slot the HxH anime got compared to Naruto though.

You should find some German anime news site to write articles for....

It seems up-to episode 99 it aired on Nippon TV from 10:55-11:25 on Sundays, then from 99 to the end on Tuesdays 01:30 - 02:00 mid-night (Wednesday really) lol. Yeah, school-children can really watch it on a week-day at mid-night lol.

It's true that from what I checked HxH didn't get into the DVD/Blu-Ray rankings, but maybe it did rank & we just couldn't find it since Oricon IIRC shows a-lot, but most only show the top 10 or 20.

The movie showed-up though:

A series being big in one media doesn't always necessarily mean it's big in another though, like for example One-Piece was the biggest manga for a long time, but Naruto video-games sold better at the same time for a long time. At-least until Pirate-Warriors I think. Remember Yu-Gi-Oh! too.

Back during the dark-ages of One-Piece movies (2006-2009 was especially bad for One-Piece regarding movies maybe, even-though they had been going-down ever since 5 or so steadily I think. Strong-World saved the movies), the movies all did sub-billion yen from Movie #7-9, not even making it on the top-grossing list where-as Naruto did. Does that mean Naruto was bigger as a manga?

I find it interesting that the Japanese Big Three were One Piece, Naruto, and Hunter X Hunter, and the American Big Three were One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. I also find it interesting that their starting dates were 1997, 1998, and 1999, and the other one was 1997, 1999, and 2001, one year apart for one of them and two years apart from the other one.

I think that they are just big threes of the 2000s and regionally, however. The real big three is Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto. The three that are staples worldwide and will stand the test of time.
