Where do you think DragonBall was headed?

AT’s death was truly sad & devastating. Very, very sad, but as for DragonBall which isn’t that important compared to the human AT where do you think the story was headed?

I remember AT once saying some-thing to the effect of at the end of DragonBall Goku’s story was over or some-thing & being like the next generation was going to take-over. Do you think the story’d have ever went past the end of the original-series?

All the characters prior who were supposed to be next-generation just seemed to lose interest eventually. Gohan or Goten or Trunks

If Toriyama wasn't willing to make Gohan the main character in the manga, it's hard to picture him being fine with anyone else. They'd probably have continued to milk DB Super as long as they could. Technically Goku still had decades of being in his physical prime for fighting, so they could have continued the story beyond the end of Z quite easily. Maybe Oob and Pan would have become main characters but Goku probably would have been the central character still.

AT did say Gohan just wasn’t fit to be the protagonist or some-thing. I assume he meant his established personality wasn’t fit to be the protagonist for a series like DragonBall he meant.

I do wonder because AT usually said some stuff years before & usually was of the same opinion even years later (like if DragonBall story was going to happen it should happen in 10-year time-gap or some-thing & that kind-of did happen with DB-Super).

The issue is that he didn't develop any characters well enough for the viewer to see them as potential protagonists. Goku had all of that development in part 1 DB while growing up. Nobody else received that sort of attention to the point where they would make sense as a main character, not even Gohan who had significant development.

I do think that it should be noted that when AT said this he thought DragonBall was over for good perhaps. He didn’t think he’d ever come-back so what-ever happens happens in people’s thoughts I guess, but I guess he’d have to eventually figure it out if he ever were to go post original-story. He really might have to go with Gohan again but then you’d need a drastic change of some sort…or maybe Goten & Trunks (same here after the original story, but considering that was only like 3 chapters or so of their new character it might be possible to place them as MCs). But then again Goten & Trunks only really had Boo-saga & by epilogue their characters were completely different mostly.

this post looks like a mess btw.

The 10 year gap didn't help anything. It made Gohan/Goten/Trunks all distant from fighting. Oob and Pan would be the only logical choices, and let's be real, they aren't going to carry a new Dragon Ball project, at least imo.

That’s right. I liked that Goten finally got a personality of his own & that personality was way more interesting but it wasn’t suited for being MC I guess in DragonBall.

Oob & Pan were just barely introduced in the end & their power most likely wasn’t high enough yet in the end either, but AT’s last panel was in-fact that Oob & young Goku panel which was meant to be I guess the indication for next generation taking-over similar to how Kame-sen’nin was mentor before.

Here it is:
When the kanzenban came out several years later, I added a bit more to the ending. I thought that somehow it just didn’t click. I wanted to make it more clear that Goku’s battles were over, and that a new generation was taking over.
