Also because Dragon Ball is a macho 80s Shonen like Hokuto No Ken, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc.

Female villains tend to be a harder sell in series about muscular superhumans or cyborgs. Look at Terminator 3, the first half of the T-X's battle with the T-850 looks the same as some ryona MAD movie where the girl keeps getting her face slammed into a toilet.

It's just how things work overall. It's not common to find female villains unless they're love interests (Catwoman) or have some kind of sex appeal (Medusa from Greek mithology), both things DB isn't interested in.

I also think you write to what you know. You don't have to be sexist or racist to create a work of art that has characters that most identify with you. While Toriyama isn't an alien or anything like that, that's what came to his imagination.

Fair point. But he's certainly not a female and I can see him having trouble writing for them. I don't know if he would be his at week so writing for strong lead female characters. It seems like he has enough trouble writing for muscle-headed men.

Android 18? The chick from the Bojack movie? Mai? If they had the gravitas of Frieza or Cell they'd be saga-level villains.

The only one on that list of any note is #18. Mai did nothing until Super (where her role significantly shifted) and "the chick from the Bojack movie" also didn't do anything. Oh, and she was not canon, so I'm not so sure Toriyama wrote for her.

I would be more than happy with more female characters' inclusion, but the absence of said doesn't make the creator sexist.
