Title says it all, why did GT have low viewership? I don't know the reason but I'm willing to bet you guys would have a good idea on why.

DB's hype was already dying during the Boo arc and GT having minimal involvement from Toriyama didn't help. By comparison Super had Kai and the two new movies to build hype and advertised itself as the first brand new DB series in 20 years.

So GT was doomed due to Dragon Ball being on a general decline in general?

I watched GT because I was in 6th grade when it aired on Toonami. Was still heavy into DB when that happened so I enjoyed it. Not so much when I rewatched it in 2013.

Super > GT, deal with it.

Serious answer. Kenshi already mentioned the major reasons. But I also think that GT was facing a tough competition like Slam Dunk, OP and Naruto etc.,

As already said, the decline in popularity of the franchise in general was a major factor with the Boo Arc being the lowest the manga's original run reached in popularity. On top of that, plenty of other series at the time were attracting a lot of attention such as Slam Dunk. The fact GT was also an anime-exclusive series also didn't help much either.
But I also think that GT was facing a tough competition like Slam Dunk, OP and Naruto etc.,
The OP manga didn't start publication until a few months after GT finished airing, and Naruto's didn't begin until 2 years after that.

I thought they were all airing at the same time. Oh well...
