Why did Guts make his best to show he did not care for the old fella?

The dude that was a physician from the castle and was tortured then later killed by the count.

Guts made the point he didn't care, that a rat should know his place and live like a rat.

However, that wasn't true. He cared, but tried to disguise it. Puck stated he feared that he was just like the old fella/the physician --- afraid to admit that like the old fella, he was also fighting a lost battle.

But there also comes imo his fear of creating connections, much due to the pain of his loss in the Golden Age... Thus wanting to fight all alone and make it his own battle.

Because Guts was traumatized both by his early life and then the Eclipse. He allowed himself to be vulnerable and accepted by a group of people again only to feel betrayed again on a grander scale. This leads to a mentality of relying solely on oneself and his strength. He becomes a prick, and therefore views someone so weak with contempt.

Agreed essentially. But in a way, I think the person being weak may not matter. He was betrayed by Griffith, but his comrades died. So the bulk of the band didn't betray him. I think it's more like relying on himself not in fear of betrayal, but in fear of the impact the connection and then the loss may propel him into... Thus shielding himself from contact and bond.

In a way, I also think the weakness of the humans is more like something he wants to see himself as completely different. Ofc, he's way stronger, way more capable of fighting back and way more versatile. But he's challenging his own fate... And I think that if he gets close to someone he judges as weak, he may think of himself as weak, or at least, incapable of changing his fate... Which I think he fears is the case, or may be the case. So he fears that the weakling may be a projection of himself as well and by distancing himself from that, seeing himself as non-human, kind of, he can get away from the fear he's also fighting a lost battle.

Maybe he sees himself as a potential rat, but he won't know until the future plays out. If he defeats Griffith he's not a rat, but if he fails then he was just a rat and got what he deserved for acting out of place. Or maybe he thinks that people should live one way (like a rat), but is breaking that rule himself, because he just can't bring himself to follow that rule because his psyche can't handle following it.

He might not like that the world (in his view) works like that so does feel sad, but he can't change the world so tries to accept the situation as it is as how things ought to be as it's jarring to accept that the world is messed up (like David Hume's is-ought problem/fallacy. You could say his attempt to make sense of the world fails Hume's law). He wishes the world could be different and less cruel, but he's seen what happened when Griffith tried to make a fairer world and did evil and then became a much worse person (as Femto) during his attempts to achieve it, supporting the idea that it's a bad idea to try to change things.

Basically some old disfigured guy helped Guts but ended up being executed. Guts could have very easily prevented the execution but decided to watch it instead.
