Will Luffy surpass Roger?

I used to assume that Luffy didn't need to surpass Roger to become the Pirate King, but I'd say that's somewhat doubtful now. We already have Luffy battling with the Yonko 1 v 1, and we know he is destined to fight an even stronger Blackbeard + World Government after this. If anything, it would seem odd if Luffy didn't surpass Roger going by the foes he will still need to defeat.

What do you think?

I think he has to at least be on the level of the Yonko.

For now, I'd say no unless there's major shifts in the power scale. There's a fairly significant gap between Yonko and Pirate King tier when considering Oden VS Roger, so unless Teach ends up surpassing the other Yonko by a vast amount, I wouldn't say it's necessary. Even if there's a villain after Teach such as the Gorosei, I can't see them being above Yonko tier individually when considering the thought of 2 Yonko teaming up was treat as putting the World Government at a solid disadvantage.

Going back to this thread after being current I think Luffy will at least be as strong as Roger if not more. With the addition of Luffy gaining Advanced Haoshoku and the possible reveal of Gear 5, I just don't see him being any weaker. Being the Pirate King isn't necessarily about power but to hold that status indefinitely you need to triumph over any rivals that seek you.
