The manga isn't all too bad for DB standards. It's a mess, but at the manga is just a collaborative effort between Toriyama, Toyotaroh, and whatever the other guy's name was. The anime, on the other hand, is just a mess of a bunch of writers not knowing to do.

Ah, I shouldn't understate Ring ni Kakero's influence, either. Although it was heavily inspired by Tomorrow's Joe, it eventually took a life of its own with its flashier, more over the top battles. Ring ni Kakero pioneered a lot of writing tropes you see in Shoh-nen today.
