As I mentioned, they head into the Cell Game full of fear and doubt. That's just not possible if they assume Goku is at full power at 50% and that Cell isn't terribly far beyond that because Trunks and Vegeta have surpassed Goku's level. Piccolo's strong enough to survive a Cell Junior which should be much stronger than 50% Goku.

Only Trunks and Vegeta are stronger. We've already been through with Trunks (He's pulling a Spaceship Kaioshin, pretty much) and Vegeta's actually confident.

We've seen Trunks and Vegeta confident in their power before. This ain't one of those times. Why?

Trunks isn't confident because the messiah (Goku) doesn't believe he can beat Cell. That's why he approached Gohan and asked him if he knew why Goku was so calm. This at least tells us that Trunks expected Cell to become much more powerful.

Vegeta told Goku that he was going to be the one to finish Cell, so he seemed confident enough. My guess is he didn't think Cell was hiding that much of his power, or his 2nd rosat gains were enough for him to believe Cell's potential max power wouldn't be a big deal.

Does Trunks think he is more powerful than Goku?

If Vegeta was really confident he would have attacked Cell outright, confident Vegeta doesn't defer to anyone.

I doubt it. If he was, it doesn't make a lot of sense for him to be putting everything on Goku's shoulders. He talks as if Goku is the one who'll determine whether they'll win the Cell Games or not.

Vegeta also likes to watch things play out before making his move. He stayed in the shadows when Goku was fighting #19 and only decided to enter when Goku was in trouble. Vegeta said he wanted to see what Goku was capable of before the battle began. He just seems more observant when it comes to Goku. When Goku suggested going first, both Trunks and Vegeta were shown to be surprised, with Trunks questioning if they should even be starting Goku. That leads me to believe one of them probably expected to take on Cell first.

I think Vegeta is a lot more confident than Trunks (regarding confidence in their own powers). Considering they're roughly equals after RoSaT trip 2 seems to me that discussion on the lookout revealed a lot about Cell's limits..and Vegeta wasn't present during the discussion.

I agree, I think Vegeta not being privy to the conversation adds to that. Surely Trunks informed his father of what he now knows, but I think Vegeta dismissed it publicly, while being concerned privately. The entire Z Team is shitting their pants heading into the Tournament, all except for Goku. They have zero faith in their power.

This is the point GSM. Only Goku can tangle with Cell. And Goku can't beat Cell. Goku is > Them. That's known. That's the narrative heading into the Cell Game.

Just something i noticed that can further illustrate my point:

Chapter: 355 (DBZ 161), P8.3-4
Context: talking about how Trunks and co. lost to the androids
Tenshinhan: “[Trunks] is the man who took down Freeza…And he was helpless before these androids…I’ll be frank…! No matter how strong Goku may be, he shouldn’t be that different from Trunks or Vegeta…He definitely can’t win…! Not even Goku…”

Tenshinhan, much like CG Trunks, knows Goku is not their strongest card, but still holds him in a higher regard nonetheless. That's because he's Goku. He can make even the most helpless situation look fixable. Future Gohan thinks so, Future Bulma thinks so, Future Trunks thinks so, Tenshinhan,thinks so...

Y'all sounding like the people who argue Vegeta's "You're #1" speech trying to relate a character's respect with Goku with Goku's power.

How'd you see a fight between Vegeta and Piccolo at that time?

As far as battle smarts go, they're roughly the same. But Piccolo is far more cautious while Vegeta is still pretty much a dunderhead until the Boo Arc happens.

I envision it going the exact same way Goku vs. 100% Freeza went. Close to a certain extent, but with Vegeta still having a noticeable edge. Vegeta's never shown the wits to use a barrier, though, so unlike what happened when Goku was faced with the Kienzan copycat, Vegeta would probably be done in by Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade.
