Did Future Trunks get stronger during the Android Saga?

That's your interpretation...if that was the case, Trunks would say: "Compared to these Androids, I could fight the future ones fairly well", but he didn't. He only said he could fight them fairly well and there's no such subjectiveness in "fairly well"- it means a non-ass kick gap.

That was the context behind that quote. He was comparing the future androids with the present Androids.

Again, assumption. Like I said, if that was the case he would say: "Compared to these Androids, I could fight the future ones fairly well" or something like that. He didn't say "RELATIVELY" as well. Trunks just meant he could fight the Androids of his time fairly well, while 3 years ago he was hugely weaker than them. Don't get more simple than that.

Not to say future Gohan SSJ (1 arm) was not that above less than half future #17 and future Trunks SSJ (age 17) wasn't that above than future Gohan SSJ (1 arm), making him at most at ~60% of future #17, so he obviously couldn't fight them fairly well, even when compared with the present ones. That's the same gap as between Ginyus and Goku [bursts].
Again, the context of that scene is him stating the androids are stronger than his timeline's androids.

Future Trunks wasn't that much stronger than Gohan, yet when he returned, the androids treated him as one-shot garbage.
It's kind of obvious they were toying with him when he fought them, which made him appear to be able to fight them ''fairly well''.

EmmaWinters Translation: "What, you're still alive, Trunks? Nevertheless, no other fool [dabbles in] futile endeavors as well as you do."

Her translation sounds similar to what smurf said. With that, it does look like there was more than one encounter.
That doesn't really point out to more than one encounter in the past, because he is challenging them again after he got beaten.

@GokhanDBZfan

I'm totally against the idea of the future Androids toying with future Trunks. It goes against the present > future logic and makes this part more complicate than it needs to be.

Trunks only compared the present Androids with the future ones when he said "they're not as strong as this". When he said he could fight them fairly well it means he could fight them fairly well, nothing more, nothing less.

Trunks isn't comparable to either version of the Androids, that much should be painfully clear.

They treat him like a toy when he returns.

Android #17 also said to Imperfect Cell he was playing with Kamiccolo, an opponent equal to him.

Except Android 18 expects to kill or at least considerable hurt Trunks with one blast.

If both Androids fought seriously against Trunks, why does #17 believe #18 can win on her own?

@GokhanDBZfan - I don't think the blast would kill Trunks. Sure, it could hurt him (the same way Vegeta's blast, if not suppressed, could kurt Kaioken Goku).

@Evil Vegeta - I think only one of them fought Trunks, not the two together. And #17 would think #18 could kill Trunks, since he believed she was still stronger than him.

If Cell's data on Trunks is from Trunks before he leaves for the past again, then he's probably a lot weaker. Cell's statement implies Trunks isn't in the Androids league.

All Cell said was Trunks could not possibly defeat #17 and #18. I don't see how this implies a big gap.

"With your power, you couldn't possibly defeat No.17 or No.18" makes it clear enough that they're out of his league. Cell is very clear that his power is inferior to either Android alone. You don't have to think the difference is astronomical, but he isn't close to them.

All Cell implied was #17 and #18 are > Trunks. Again, I don't think this implies a big difference at all. Trunks was weaker than each of them, making it impossible to beat one of them, since despite being weaker he still hadn't infinite stamina, what's more, there are both of them.

I think Trunks was fairly close to them. Not quite there, but still fairly close.

Raditz used the same way of describing Goku's chances against him. It can imply a big difference.

Cell said #17 or #18. He doesn't need to factor in both because Trunks can't even beat one.

Raditz said Goku couldn't possibly be a match for him, it's a bit different. It has not to imply a big difference. Like "the no match", which was used to show both a big and a small difference, like:

Nappa: “Hey, Vegeta!! Something's strange...! There's more than just one or two readings with a battle power of over 1,000! What's with this planet?..."
Vegeta: “Don't worry. They're no match for us, after all. For the time being, let's just search for the guy with the highest battle power...”

Chapter: 108, P7.3
Grandpa Gohan: “In any case, you really have gotten strong! I never thought I’d be no match for you! Did you receive training from Lord Muten Roshi?”
Goku: “Yup!”

In my manga, Son Gohan even goes so far as to say he was absolutely no match for Goku.

It's not that much of a difference. The point it's getting across is you have no chance against the opposition. That's what Cell is saying. Stamina isn't a factor, Trunks' lack of power is.

You've said Trunks can be close like Zarbon to Vegeta, but I think the difference could be a lot bigger. There's no way to verify this because we never saw the battles. If he could fight them fairly well, then it means whatever you think it means.

Of coure, Trunks' lack of power is a factor and the stamina just let the situation helpless. All I'm trying to say is that Cell's quote doesn't have to imply a big difference between them, only a noticeable one.

262 (DBZ 68), P14.3-4
Context: after beating up Zarbon
Vegeta: “Hahhahahah! At that level, you’re helpless!”
Zarbon: “I’m astonished, you’ve truly made marvelous progress..."

Zarbon was also said to be helpless against Vegeta, despite the difference not being that big (Zarbon was around 22k or so). Even Kaioken Goku was said to be helpless against 18k Vegeta IIRC.

Vegeta was helpless against #18 as well. It's impossible to tell because it applies to many different battles.

I don't think it really makes much of a difference in the end. Trunks just can't beat the Future Androids before going into the rosat. That's really all that matters.
